Every app and operating system seems to have a Dark Mode these days. Well, guess what? Excel does as well now, thanks to a recent update for Microsoft 365 Insiders on the Beta Channel. Having said that, Excel has effectively had half a Dark Mode since 2016, when the ‘Black’ theme was added. This paints the ribbon and other UI features black, and activating it is essential to unlocking the other half. Do the following: 1. Select File to enter the Backstage view. 2. Select Account to open your account settings. 3. From the Office Theme dropdown, choose ‘Black’. You’ll notice an immediate change, but when you go back to the worksheet view, the grid remains untouched. However, on the View tab, a new button appears called Switch Modes. Select this to darkify the grid. Further clicks toggle between the light and dark states. 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗦 While Dark Mode is a visual aid feature that affects how colours are rendered to maintain contrast and legibility, there are some intriguing differences. Tests were carried out on how two rows of colours in the Fill Colour and Font Colour palettes are displayed. Amongst many mismatches, it was found that White becomes off-black, Black becomes off-white, Yellow becomes murky green, and Dark Blue becomes pale blue. Strangely, a chart was not impacted by Dark Mode, except for the labels, which changed to light grey despite the background and bars remaining the same. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 It’s early days, so improvements may occur. Maybe Dark Mode will become a one-stage process. Maybe windows and dialog boxes will be darkified. Maybe Power Query’s ribbon will be darkified. Maybe the colours in the Fill Colour and Font Colour palettes will reflect the active mode.
