Stay tuned for a dodgy taste test! These innocuous lumps on the ground are an #Earthball or #Scleroderma - not to be confused with the skin condition. Also known as #PigskinPuffballs, these are gasteroid mushrooms, meaning their spores are on the inside. The rough and tough outer layer is called the peridium, while the internal structure is called the gleba, it starts out all white and matures into a powdery mass of blackish purple spores. Immature Pisolithus can look similar, but have yellow mycelium at the base and small defined peridioles inside instead of a smooth uniform gleba. . All books in North America (including my own) will tell you that these are toxic, capable of causing severe GI upset and even neurological symptoms similar to muscarine poisoning. Earthballs are especially toxic for dogs. The spores can also cause a variety of issues if inhaled. HOWEVER, just because we label this as toxic, doesn’t mean it cannot still be edible! . In South East Asia and the Philippines in particular, these mushrooms are highly valued as food. Known as bu-o, they are harvested when the gleba is still white and the outer peridium is removed. I’ve heard from many of my followers that this is one of their favorite mushrooms - so I decided to give it a try when I found some primo immature specimens. . I don’t recommend you try this at home - however my curiosity got the best of me and I needed to know what these tasted like. Following the same logic, I peeled the outside and cooked up the solid all white internal structure. I found them to taste similar to some boletes I’ve had, but also reminiscent of a puffball, although the texture was less soft and more chewy/meaty. . After 24 hours, I experienced no discomfort after eating 5-6 pieces, so I put them rest into a dumpling curry I made which was delicious. I will definitely eat these again! .
