Q: Why do you "tap" the mushrooms? A: When out mushroom hunting, you often find mushrooms in various states of maturity/decay. Tapping a mushroom is a quick way to judge the density of a mushroom. The more dense/solid sounding the mushroom, the better. More hollow sounding mushrooms are often infested with bugs or have matured past the point of wanting to harvest them as food. Additionally, tapping a mushroom helps to dislodge dirt, forest litter, and critters (bugs, slugs, etc...). Tapping the mushroom can help disperse a significant amount of spores, never a bad thing if you are taking the mushroom out of it's environment and putting it in your basket. However, mushrooms are fully capable of spreading spores on their own. My primary reason for tapping mushrooms is not to release spores (despite what people say in the comments). I wasn't aware of it until people on social media started comment on it, but tapping mushrooms produces some wonderful sounds. Each mushroom has it's own unique resonance. I love to listen to the range of sounds produced by different mushrooms, although boletes tend to provide the best "beats" of all. Much of the tapping I do is as intentional ASMR content. Tapping a mushroom has also become a tool for engaging my audience. It is a simple way for me to interact with a mushroom that increases the number of comments a video will receive (mostly from people asking me why I tap mushrooms). The more comments I get, the more people see my videos. My hope is that people will read my captions and learn something from watching my educational content. It might seem annoying to some, but the truth is that tapping a mushroom is a fun and effective way to get more views and engagement (even from people who say it’s stupid). . . . #fascinatedbyfungi
Getting slap happy with some Alaskan mushrooms. In this case, I am just tapping the mushrooms because I like the sound for ASMR purposes. #mushroomasmr #mushroomtaps #fascinatedbyfungi #mycology #fungi #alaska

2022 Top 15 Countdown 1/15: The ushiest gushiest Witches Butter (Naematelia aurantia) growing on a hardwood log infected with Stereum mycelium. These jelly fungi are generally edible but have little to no flavor and are mostly textural. They have an amazing capacity to dry out and rehydrate with rain, lasting for months, spreading their spores whenever they get wet. This is still my highest viewed video on TikTok ever with >26 million views, hope you enjoy! #fascinatedbyfungi #top15 #2022recap
Little did I know when I first found this #SculptedPufball #Calvatiasculpta that it would cause so much controversy. Before someone plugs this into ChatGPT/AI - these puffballs are saprotrophic (decay) mushrooms that grow in the Sierra range of California. This species is known for its distinctive large meringue-like spikes on the outer layer (peridium). When puffballs are all white and solid inside, they are good to eat (as demonstrated in this video). However, when they start turning yellowish and get softer; they are no longer good to eat. When puffballs fully mature, they turn into a big pile of spores that gets spread around by rain, wind, animals, etc… As with many other mushrooms, puffballs continue to mature and goto spore even if they have been disturbed by an animal. Mushrooms have been around long before humans and will be here long after we are gone. . I was not expecting this innocent foraging tutorial video to spark such backlash and vitriol, but I guess that is the nature of the Internet. Many people seemed particularly upset at me for breaking apart a puffball, and projected their judgments and misunderstandings without taking the moment to understand the basic biology of a mushroom. This is the fruiting body of the mycelium below, similar to a fruit on a plant, it does not harm the mycelium below to pick a mushroom. Additionally, cutting vs. picking a mushroom does not significantly impact the future appearance of mushrooms (a 30 year study on harvesting mushrooms backs this up). . In a world where we are witnessing the daily destruction of natural habitats and a categorical disregard for the global environment - I understand the misplaced rage and anger people feel when they see me breaking apart a mushroom. However, I ask you to think critically for a moment and recognize that the threats to the future of fungi are much larger than a single mushroom. Please save your outrage for the governments and corporations that exploit this planet and permanently poison our world with emissions, PFAS chemicals, and microplastics. . Foragers are not your enemy. We pick up trash and remove invasive plants. We love and respect nature. Go touch some grass. . #mushrooms #foraging #nature #puffball #spores
Drought consitions in Massachusetts are making me sad, found just a couple of dessicated specimens like this Black Footed Polypore (Royoporus badius). It is a common white rot fungi on hardwoods and conifers.
