1. Dermatology wasn’t actually my first choice of specialty. I had my eyes set on another surgical specialty, which I didn’t match into—but I am so, so, SO grateful that I ended up in dermatology. I truly couldn’t be happier doing the work I do. It’s true what they say: when one door closes, another one opens. ✨ 2. I still struggle with imposter syndrome on a regular basis. Even after 13 years of schooling to become a dermatologist and another year to become a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, that inferiority complex is hard to shake after years of chasing your goal and telling myself “I’m not good enough”. These days, I’m working on being kinder to myself—seeing my life through the eyes of 20-year-old me, who would’ve died for what I’ve accomplished today. ❤️ 3. Scarcity mindset is ingrained in me. As an immigrant, I came to Canada with my parents when I was 12, and my family went through tough financial times. I got my first job at 14 and had to contribute financially in one way or another ever since. To this day, I still feel a little guilty splurging on everyday things—like a fancy coffee. ☕️ But that scarcity mindset shaped my drive, ambition, and work ethic, so I try to see it as a superpower I was blessed with growing up. 4. I don’t have a lot of friends. I was always an introvert—the nerdy, shy kid in school. Being social was never my forte. I have a few great friends I’ve kept from different stages of my life, but I don’t spend as much time with them as I’d like. 5. I constantly feel pulled between work, kids, marriage, and my personal “self.” You can have it all—just not all at once. So, I try to prioritize what matters most at certain times. During the week, I focus on work. Evenings and weekends are for my family. I try to leave a chunk of Sunday just for myself. ☀️ #medicinelife #immigrantlife #dermatologist #dermresidency1.
