Natural doesn’t automatically mean good! It’s easy to use the phrase “this product is natural” but let’s make sure we all remember that natural products can be harmful too…. The examples I’ve given: • Mushrooms - many mushrooms are poisonous when ingested, some are hallucinogenic and some cause liver failure • Tea tree oil. Safe when put on the skin but if swallowed even in small amounts can cause vomiting, drowsiness and even seizures • Foxgloves. A common and beautiful garden plant but if eaten can cause dangerous heart rhythms and even cardiac arrest. • Nutmeg. If eaten in large quantities (more than a couple of teaspoons in a child) can cause hallucinations, palpitations and seizures • Apple and pear pips. Contain cyanide! If eaten in large quantities block the bodies ability to use oxygen and can be harmful, even fatal. Whilst products we use every day like table salt and baking powder are synthesised in factories prior to us consuming them but are extremely safe. It’s also SO important to remember it depends on the quantities of a lot of these as to whether they are safe or not and how you use them/put them on! E.g paracetamol is extremely safe in the correct dosage but in overdose can cause liver damage. It’s not as simple as labelling something safe or unsafe there is a lot more to it than that….
