Here we go… hold on tight for the comments… let’s talk about vaccines 💉⚠️! Here’s a more detailed breakdown: 1) MenB and PCV13 Timing: The second dose of the Meningitis B (MenB) vaccine will be given at 12 weeks of age instead of 16 weeks. The first dose of the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) will be moved to 16 weeks of age instead of 12 weeks. This is to offer better protection against Men B to younger babies who are most vulnerable. 2) Hib/MenC Vaccine (Menitorix): Children born on or after July 1, 2024, will not receive the combined Hib/MenC vaccine (Menitorix) at their one-year vaccination appointment. This is because the vaccine is being discontinued by producer GSK. Protection against Meningitis C will continue through the adolescent MenACWY vaccination program and a NEW 18-month Dose of the 6-in-1 vaccine (DTaP/IPV/Hib/HepB) will be given at the 18-month appointment to provide cover for Hep B. 3) Children born on or after the 1st July 2024 will be offered a further dose of the MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccine at 18 months of age rather than at 3yrs 4 months. This is to try to increase the uptake of the second MMR vaccine and provide better protection against measles with European measles cases increasing over the past few years. These changes should pave the way for the Chickenpox vaccine to be given at 12 and 18 months although a date for this has yet to be confirmed. Any questions? Put them in the comments below. 15 years of medicine in 1.5 minutes… For all those who have been asking why and how I am STILL studying nearly 10 years post graduate and what this interview business is all about - watch til the end ✨📚 Medicine is one of those careers where you will always be studying, even when the exams are done, science and technology are evolving so rapidly there’s always something you need to do to keep yourself up to date. I will however be happy once I am a consultant and all these formal exams and interviews are over 😂 Best of luck to all the paediatricians interviewing for sub specialty training over the next few weeks! #paediatrician #ukmedicine #medicine #medicalcareers #medicalstudent #doctor #nhsdoctor #exams #interviewprep #constantstudy
Like many medical influencers I’m here to bust some of the increasing misinformation about health online social media! I have spent hundreds of unpaid hours over the past 18 months making content and that is because I’m passionate about empowering parents to feel more confident when it comes to their kids health. Disclaimer: I have earned a very SMALL amount of money from social media since I started my page but not from sponsorship from any drug or vaccine brands and I’m extremely cautious about who I accept collaborations with. I love my job in the NHS and wouldn’t change it ❤️🌈
Doctors pay UK vs USA. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 Now I know that indemnity in the USA costs a lot… as does medical school - leaving US doctors in more debt than doctors in the UK however the pay discrepency is still pretty vast! Before the comments go wild - I won’t be moving abroad to chase better pay as for me personally, living close to my family is more important but I know doctors pay has caused a lot of controversy over the last few years and, for some, is a driving factor to leave the UK to work abroad - what are your thoughts? Nappy changing top tips! Send this to someone whose expecting their first baby 👍🏻😂 Some of the basics I’ve already told my husband about nappy changing in newborns… I’m not sure he’s ever changed a nappy before whereas I’ve already changed hundreds in my job (I was actually a nanny before I became a doctor!) Any other tips for him? Did you know these before you had your first? #pregancy #firstbaby #firsttimeparents #forthedads #paediatrician
Don’t make promises you can’t keep. So many parents assume their kids won’t need investigations and then are shocked when we say… you know some bloods might be helpful here. Their face drains and they say “but I told them there wouldn’t be any needles” … oops! You know what they say about assuming… when you assume you make an a** out of U And ME 🫣 #emergencydepartment #ERlife #paeds #paedsdoc #kidshealth #toddlers #childhealth #doctor #mumlife #parenthood #parenthacks #parentingtips #illness #sickness #paediatrician
🦠 Ways to Prepare for the Back-to-School Bugs 1. Teach your kids the basics with hand hygiene and using tissues BEFORE they go back to school. -> Teach your child the “20-second rule” (sing Happy Birthday twice or at least 3 verses of baby shark!) when washing hands. -> Make it fun with foamy soap or a favourite hand sanitiser clipped to their school bag. 2. Try to maximise sleep and nutrition NOW - A well-rested, well-fed body fights infections better 💪🏻 -> Early bedtime routines a week before school helps reset sleep. -> Plenty of fruit and veg whilst they are eating at home 3. Check that all their vaccines are up to date - For high-risk groups: ask your GP about flu & RSV protection. 4. Ensure they stay well hydrated when they go back to school - buy them a new labelled water bottle and check their intake rewarding good drinking. Hydration and exercise help keep the body fit and healthy. Remember there’s no way to actually stop your kids catching pathogens/germs! No magic tablet or vitamin that is proven to strengthen the immune system. However these simple things are often underestimated in their effectiveness at keeping kids well… Follow for more survival tips if the dreaded autumn lurgys do hit your house 👍🏻
1. Why is there no cover over the springs?! This child could have VERY easily sustained a nasty leg fracture when his leg went through the springs and he fell forwards OR a nasty arm fracture as his arms took the brunt of the impact on the ground. This child was uninjured which was extremely lucky as I’ve seen serious breaks sustained in similar mechanisms… and in this case it would have been completely preventable. 2. I’m not sure what the goal was here - running off the trampoline to the ground? Whatever it was, trampolines should really only be used for one thing…. bouncing! Jumping off a trampoline to the ground could also cause injury as that is quite a height for such a small person - try not to encourage playing around on them in other ways. 3. There’s no netting surrounding this trampoline! In many ways this trampoline is not safe for use by children ⚠️ HOWEVER a few simple measures could make it significantly safer: covers on the springs and netting surrounding the sides 👍🏻 I see trampoline injuries almost daily in my job as a paediatric A&E doctor however I do understand they can be super fun for kids. We just have a responsibility to make them as safe as possible to protect our kids from an unnecessary trip to the emergency department!
