We gathered at the hotel lobby at 11:30 PM, then set off on a two-hour drive to Mount Ijen. We arrived around 1 AM and grabbed a cup of instant noodles at a local warung. At 2 AM, we took a big group photo before heading to the trailhead to start the hike. It took about 1.5 hours to reach the crater rim. For those who wanted to see the famous blue fire, we had to descend into the crater. It was super crowded that day — the trail down was packed, and we had to squeeze our way through slowly. I kept thinking, I must see the blue fire!! After about 45 minutes of careful descent, we finally reached the bottom. It was packed with people, the smell of sulfur was intense, and thick smoke filled the air — I was almost choked by it. But we managed to snap some photos and then had to hike back up another 30 minutes. By the time we got back to the rim, the sky had started to brighten. We were lucky enough to catch a double rainbow! As the sun rose, we saw the jaw-droppingly beautiful blue lake with a clear blue sky above it. After such a tough climb, it truly felt worth it. There’s a saying: “Difficult routes lead to unforgettable memories and unexpected moments.” That perfectly sums up this adventure. On the way down, we could finally see all the incredible scenery that had been hidden in the darkness during the climb.
