A ✨macaronic✨drinking song from Western Canada O’Brien is a ✨multilingual✨ drinking song, weaving together English, Yiddish, and snatches of Hebrew prayer to create a character who keeps complaining about life’s sorrows to his friend (the aforementioned O’Brien). The lyrics were created by Philip Ney in 1920s Winnipeg, Manitoba 🇨🇦 - part of the tune is his own and the other is the popular English drinking song “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”. There were a couple more verses, but the Ashkenazic Hebrew was tripping me up & I wanted to get this out for St Patricks day. As a social song, there are several popular variants collected by the inimitable Ruth Rubin.
