Leonard Alfred Funk Jr. (August 27, 1916 – November 20, 1992) was an American sergeant and one of the most decorated soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II. 🎖️ He took part in the Normandy landings, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. 🌍 He is best known for the events of January 29, 1945, in Holzheim, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. 📅 That day, after taking command of his company, Funk led an attack that captured over 80 German soldiers without any American losses. ⚡ Later, while the prisoners were under guard, a German patrol surprised the American sentries and re-armed their men. ⚠️ Funk arrived at the scene and found himself face-to-face with a German officer pointing a pistol at him. 🔫 Instead of surrendering, Funk laughed, suddenly raised his Thompson submachine gun, and opened fire, killing 21 Germans and wounding many others. 💥 The rest were quickly recaptured. 🔗 For this extraordinary bravery and composure under the threat of death, Funk received the Medal of Honor from President Harry S.
