When The Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin is perhaps one of the only songs to challenge Stairway to Heaven in sheer emotion, and it comes from the same album! Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie were two blues artists feeling the effects of The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, a flood that costed at least 3.2 billion dollars (and probably much more) in damage to the people of the Mississippi Delta. Led Zeppelin got to work on their cover at Headley Grange, where an intricate set of microphones, compressors, limiters, and a delay machine created the amazing sound of John Bonham’s drums. Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan could be my favorite Steely song, but it wasn’t until today I gound out about it’s awesome origins! Walter Becker and David Pagen, the co-founders of the band, wrote the song based off the life of Owsley Stanley, a massive figure in the 1960s. Owsley was known for synthesizing LSD for the Merry Pranksters, a group headed by the author Ken Kesey who took a summer road trip in 1964, giving LSD to all that would have it.
