Walter Becker and David Pagen, the co-founders of the band, wrote the song based off the life of Owsley Stanley, a massive figure in the 1960s. Owsley was known for synthesizing LSD for the Merry Pranksters, a group headed by the author Ken Kesey who took a summer road trip in 1964, giving LSD to all that would have it.
