Playing a traditional folk ballad called “O’ Death” outside a medieval church on the beautiful Isle of Harris, Scotland. This is a song I’ve sung for many years and it’s very dear to me, being one of the first I ever learned on the banjo, but, for some reason, I’ve never recorded or released it over the years. It’s such a great American folk ballad, commonly sung in Appalachia, with origins in much older Scottish ballads. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I thought I’d release this short wee teaser video today and I’m happy to say that this song will also be on my upcoming album, which will be releasing in early 2025! I always love posting this version of this class wee ballad sung in the Scots language. I have since found out that this ballad actually originates from Dundee, a wee town in Scotland just North of Edinburgh across the River Forth and the River Tay. The Overgate is now the name of a shopping centre / mall there, although it used to be a medieval street which had a very notorious reputation for its lively night life, and we indeed get a small glimpse of that here in this ballad!
