I have since found out that this ballad actually originates from Dundee, a wee town in Scotland just North of Edinburgh across the River Forth and the River Tay. The Overgate is now the name of a shopping centre / mall there, although it used to be a medieval street which had a very notorious reputation for its lively night life, and we indeed get a small glimpse of that here in this ballad!
