I’ll admit, I hate that I have to speak fast in some videos because of 90 second limit for reels, so some parts will sound rushed. I get that, and I dislike it. However, this first chapter of Bleak House is too, too brilliant to bypass a memorization attempt. It’s one of literature’s greatest flexes in prose, atmosphere, imagery, and allusion. “Solitary Confinement” by Douai, August 20, 1916. I visted the only remaining block of the German POW camp here at Beale, AFB in California. Soldiers who were husbands, fathers, and sons were kept here during the war until Germany surrendered to the Allies. For the POW’s here, they received a dignified and humane treatment; they were allowed to work for their wages, they employed their talents in farming, music, and mechanics to make prison life more bearable, and they cultivated an English education. It’s important to remember that not every German soldier was a Nazi, and many of them held deep resentment toward Hitler and the detruction he unleashed throughout Europe. While some desired to remain in America even after the war, nothing could quite satiate the longing of others to return to their homeland.
