Soldiers who were husbands, fathers, and sons were kept here during the war until Germany surrendered to the Allies. For the POW’s here, they received a dignified and humane treatment; they were allowed to work for their wages, they employed their talents in farming, music, and mechanics to make prison life more bearable, and they cultivated an English education. It’s important to remember that not every German soldier was a Nazi, and many of them held deep resentment toward Hitler and the detruction he unleashed throughout Europe. While some desired to remain in America even after the war, nothing could quite satiate the longing of others to return to their homeland.
