This picture is one my Mum had kept for years - it's from the UK Nationals Yo-Yo Contest in 1999. It was my first Nationals (the one the year prior, which was held at the CBBC Big Bash in Birmingham) my Mum wouldn't let me attend (she was quite over protective bless her, and at 14 she didn't want me hopping in a van with the owner of the store I taught at whom she'd never met before, to travel to a big event, so I kind of understand 😅) This was also the last contest of the 90s craze before all promotion and support stopped, and before the new BYYA that I was apart of picked up Nationals again in 2002). What's special, for me, about this photo - is that it was actually taken by a reporter for the local newspaper. It was not only the first time I'd had someone want to take my photo for a paper - it's the fact that out of all the players there, they picked me to include in their article. It made me feel incredibly special, and a memory I still look back on fondly to this day. Something little for some - but was huge for me, a shy kid who'd found something he loved and was reasonably good at too! I ended up coming joint 4th (which I was genuinely gutted about) this was back in the day where trick lists were still performed at many contests - and so a bunch of us got 100% and we had to have a loop off for the tie-breaker. I looped my butt off with my trusty ProYo and looking back on the footage I was some 15 loops ahead of the person who ultimately won the division. Unfortunately though - my ProYo betrayed me and came undone during my run ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ Still - a great experience, one that I'll never forget!
