Tina Watson, a 26-year-old from Helena, Alabama, tragically lost her life on October 22, 2003, during a scuba diving excursion at the SS Yongala shipwreck off the coast of Queensland, Australia. She was on her honeymoon with her husband of 11 days, Gabe Watson. Tina, a novice diver with only five dives, and Gabe, a certified rescue diver, embarked on a dive without a guide, despite offers for an orientation dive. Approximately two minutes into the dive, Tina lost consciousness and sank to the ocean floor. Gabe surfaced to seek help, but by the time assistance arrived, Tina had been underwater for about ten minutes and could not be revived. Initial investigations raised suspicions due to inconsistencies in Gabe's accounts and his actions during the dive. In 2009, Gabe pleaded guilty in Australia to manslaughter for failing to fulfill his duties as a dive buddy and was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison, with 12 months to be served. Upon his return to the United States, Gabe faced additional charges in Alabama, including capital murder.
