May, 2018, Cameron Herrin, 18 at the time, was racing his new Ford Mustang when he fatally struck 24-year-old Jessica Reisinger-Raubenolt, who was pushing her 1-year-old daughter in a stroller on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, Florida. The car was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour at the time of impact. Tragically, Jessica’s husband, David Raubenolt, drove by the scene not knowing until minutes later that he had just witnessed his family’s crash. The mother and daughter were taken to the hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. Responsible for the crime was 18-year-old high school graduate Cameron Herrin who was street racing on Bayshore Boulevard when he hit Reisinger-Raubenolt and her child. In April, 2021, Herrin was arrested and sentenced to 24 years in prison for the incident. Since the sentencing, social media accounts — primarily on TikTok, X and Instagram — have been popping up, suggesting the 24-year sentence was too harsh. The hastag # justice for Cameron Herrin started trending and people began demanding a lighter sentence by claiming he was “too” attractive and young to receive such a sentence. In 2022, however, a judge declined to reduce Cameron Herrin’s sentence who now will remain in prison to serve his time.
