I used to think I had to manage my time… As if time was some resource outside of me, something I could organise, control, master. But in my thirties, I’ve started to feel time differently. Time isn’t something to manage. It’s something I am. The philosopher Heidegger said that we are time — we are defined by our limited and temporal bodily experience. The way we exist is shaped by time. Now I know: time can’t be handled. It’s limited. It slips. It teaches us through its very passing. The paradox is that, the older I get, the more precious time feels — yet also the more I see how important it is not to chase it. To live it. To spend it authentically. And for me, living a creative life — writing poems, songs, making music — is, right now, a very authentic expression of my time on this earth. I used to think that with songwriting, being productive was the goal. Write more songs, faster, project myself into the future, tick them off like milestones. Now I see songwriting as something different: not about managing output, but about being with time. Each song is a way of inhabiting the present, of crystallising this fleeting moment into sound. Maybe that’s what art really is: not a product, but time itself, caught in form.
