Ustad Bismillah Khan | Raag Ratans Ep - 2 At the age of six, the Jewel of India, Bharat Ratna, Ustad Bismillah Khan, moved to the historic city of Benares to train under his Mamu, Ali Baksh Khan. The young Bismillah accompanied his Mamu to the Vishnu Temple every day where his uncle practiced, staying captivated for hours listening to music.. During the course of his training, Bismillah Khan mastered many musical forms and ragas and improvised patterns that had been considered impossible for the shehnai. A memorable ancedote that needs to be shared - during a train journey to the Kumbh Mela, Ustad ji met a boy who was nonchalantly playing the flute. Mesmerized by the boy'swar gyaan and melody, Bismillah Khan offered him a coin for each time he played, until his pockets were empty. The boy got off at the next station leaving Ustadji in the aura of surs.At the concert that followed, at the Kumbh Mela, Ustad presented the same melodious Raaga that he had heard from the boy on the train. This was greatly appreciated by the audience.Musical scholars in attendance at the concert were agnostic to this tune, and asked Ustadji to name the ‘Raga’ - to which Bismillah Khan replied, that it was'Raag Kanharira' - Kanha ke bansuri se aaya hua raag. He strongly believed the boy on the train was Lord Krishna. The iconic musician was an embodiment of peaceful, inter-religious coexistence in the Republic of India. He had the distinguished honor of being the only invited artist to play the Shehnai on the eve of India's independence on 15th August,1947, at Red Fort, Delhi. His program was followed by the speech of Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.
