4 years ago I was grappling with raising 2 small kids while also struggling trying to build my own company. After slogging through 2020, by December I could not even send holiday cards. After the challenges, the stress, the emptiness of the pandemic, it felt forced to paint on a smile…even for friends and family. It was at this moment when I started…an experiment. The central theme of this experiment was that I needed to pay attention to the little things in my life that were good. The premise of this experiment was very simple. It had just 3 rules: 1) Think of 10 things you’re grateful for 2) Write them down 3) Do it every day I did this for 1 year. During that first year, my life, and my happiness, took such an amazing turn for the better. Exciting changes in my life started happening. My company found a buyer. A dream opportunity appeared. Meaningful changes started to happen with my family. It was like my life up until that point had been an old rusty machine slowly squeaking along, but this mindset of gratitude was like adding the grease that those cogs and gears needed to accelerate and run more efficiently than I could have ever imagined. I started to research gratitude’s impact on our physical and mental wellbeing and learned that something as simple as writing down what you’re grateful every day has been proven by hundreds of studies to improve our health, happiness and even longevity. As a founder of a healthcare data science company, I was surprised to learn that there was a tie between gratitude and wellbeing. After spending years looking at mental health data, why didn’t I know this before? Sometimes the most important solutions to our problems are so simple, we can’t believe they could be true. This brings us to the 2nd part of the experiment—to go beyond my data and to hear from others who began to write down what they were grateful for. So I started talking about this on TikTok to see who wanted to talk about the power of gratitude. Astonishingly—tens of thousands of people joined the conversation. People from all over the world who began to practice gratitude shared their stories of how practicing gratitude changed their lives. These were stories of getting sober, recovering from losing loved ones, and rebuilding their lives after traumatic setbacks. My conclusion? Gratitude works, and it is the simplest thing you can do for a happier, healthier and richer life.
