A SUNRISE LANDSCAPE – THE SEQUENCE This is a breakdown of a real sunrise shoot—what I saw, how I planned it, and the exact moment the photo came together. A few years ago, I planned a sunrise shoot at the Healy Pass in Southwest Ireland. I’d seen images of a winding road facing east and knew it had potential. Thanks to Google Maps, I could scout the location virtually before ever stepping foot on it. On the day, the journey was long and the setup had to be done in the dark. You always want to arrive early—well before sunrise. I started with some test exposures: ISO 100 (for maximum image quality), aperture f/8, and a 5-second shutter speed. The light was still low, and there was barely any color yet. Then the light began to rise. At 2 seconds, I saw some color creeping in. At 4 and 5 seconds, the shot was blown out—too bright. I pulled it back to 1.6 seconds using exposure compensation in aperture priority mode. Still too bright. So I zoomed in slightly, adjusted again, and got to 1 second. Then it happened. A split-second burst of color—just before the sun crested the mountain. And then it was gone. The final image? ISO 100, f/8, 1 second, 31mm focal length. The curve of the road, the glow of morning light—it all came together. Landscape photography is about more than just the final image. It’s about the build-up, the patience, the tiny window when everything aligns.
