Backstage at the World's Biggest Brass Band Competition The annual European Brass Band Championships (EBBC) pits the best bands from countries across the continent against one another in a battle of the breves, a meeting of the minims, a crunch of the crotchets. Each year, one band is crowned Champion of Europe. But what does it even mean to be "the best" at music? Isn't it a subjective, taste-based pursuit? You might prefer brash sforzandi, while I interest myself only in the smoothest of ritardandi. What can a judge possibly point to in placing one excellent band above another? Well, it turns out, quite a lot. We travel to Stavanger in Norway for this year's competition, with Göta Brass from Sweden, to learn what it's all about.
