Andante 4. Finale Born in 1888 in Ternopil (Galicia, Austria-Hungary) - Ukrainian composer, pianist, musicologist, teacher, and music critic. He began his musical studies at the Lviv Conservatory with V. Kurz and continued them in Prague at the University with Z. Neiedli and O. Hostynsky, as well as at the Conservatory with Vítězslav Novák (a student of Antonín Dvořák), where he graduated in 1915. After returning to Lviv (now Lviv, Ukraine), he took up a position as director of the Lysenko Music Institute, which, under his leadership, developed into one of the most important music schools. Eastern Galicia. He taught piano, music theory, and composition there, and shaped an entire generation of professional musicians. Barvinsky and another Ukrainian composer from Lviv, Stanyslav Lyudkevych, were invited by the Ministry of Religion and Public Enlightenment to serve on the committee reforming music education in Poland at the time. In the late 1930s, he chaired the Union of Ukrainian Professional Musicians and also contributed to the monthly magazine Ukrainian Music. After World War II, he was arrested by the Soviet authorities and imprisoned for 10 years in a Mordovian concentration camp. Some of his music was burned and destroyed by the Soviets. After his return from exile in 1958, Barvinsky focused all his efforts on recovering from memory the works whose manuscripts had been burned during his arrest. He worked on this until his death. Vasyl Barvinsky died on June 9, 1963, in Lviv. Barvinsky was a master of Piano miniatures - he can be considered the father of chamber music in Western Ukraine.
