Bad isn’t always bad. One of my students took an extended break from learning English. Why? Her English was good enough for what she needed. I was happy for her. But recently, she had a meeting where she had to unexpectedly speak English. She wasn’t happy with herself afterwards. (If you ask me, she was probably fine — I imagine she handled it better than she thought.) But this isn’t about how I feel. It’s about how she felt in that moment. She had to go through that “bad” or “uncomfortable” situation to realise something: She needed to step back into class to improve. And this is something I see all the time. You have that moment of panic in a meeting. You label it as a “bad” moment. But what if you reframe it? It’s not bad. It’s simply showing you where you need to improve. The best lessons often don’t happen in class.
