VIDEO - Papers by Yoshinao Satoh MUSIC - Different Trains by Steve Reich . . . . . I randomly stumbled across this video on my youtube homepage about a week ago, and i’ve not been able to get it off my mind since. I had no prior knowledge about any of Yoshinao Satoh prior to this video, and i still don’t for the most part, but i was just absolutely blown away by the creativity on display and felt i had to share. From what i gathered under the comments & description of the video that posted this on YT, it seems like (and I might sound silly for some of this cuz i’m just going off translations regarding things from a foreign country i have absolutely no knowledge about) it was a commercial for the Mainichi Shimbun, a large japanese newspaper company, that aired on Ebi-Ten in 1991. Satoh’s inspiration for this work was how, in the midst of his harsh production schedule with the company he worked with, his eyes would drift towards the stacks of newspapers at his home, and he wondered what he could create with them. The result is one of the most stunning and impressive pieces of contemporary art i’ve ever had the luck of stumbling upon. I’m aware that Satoh has other works, and this video has interested me in checking them out. I’ve never felt genuinely compelled to share another persons art before, but this time felt different to me because it only sits at 310k views on youtube currently and that, to me, is the definition of under-appreciation.
