I've waited 35 years to hear other women & a few men saying all the things I learned to NOT say out loud by the time I was 10 years old. As the first girl grandchild in a family of men with a prominent family name in a small Southern Bible Belt town, when I defended my baby brother from the indoctrination of my father & uncles; when they'd hold him down and tickle him until he cried then berate him, calling him a "sissy" or a "little girl" it pissed me off! Me: "Stop calling him a sissy!" Them: "Hush your mouth! Respect your elders." Respect what!? Grown men taking pleasure in making children cry? And some of you will understand better than others when I tell you my "favorite" uncle (a racist, overweight high school football coach...What up, Bert?🖕) was particularly offended by my smart mouth & actively bullied me to put me in my place until I was 40 and he was 58. Don't worry, fellas! My brother grew up to be even worse and carried Bert's legacy on adding in violent rages & physical abuse...he nor his wife have spoken to me in over a year solid & what's worse, I'm no longer allowed to be in the lives of my niece and nephew. Now he hurts me but he hurts them too by not only using them as weapons, but by making sure his son is in the "He-Man Women Haters Club" & my niece is a beautiful, quiet good girl that doesn't have the time (and they don't have the money) for her to join a team or have any extracurricular activity because he's on a couple of baseball teams and simply had to have a $500 baseball bat at 11yrs old. She wanted gymnastics, but...then softball, but... "It's ok", she says with a shrug and a sweet smile. They've taught her well... I REFUSE. I will not allow her to end up as I have. I'll not be like my mom & dad; I will not turn a blind eye as so many women beaten or berated into submission around me have nor will I remain silent to these men who have actively sought to (and have been successful in) taking everything I worked hard to achieve. They attempted to, quite literally, turn me into "the mad woman in the attic" (Jane Eyre) and I almost let them...Fuck that. My precious niece deserves better.
