👇🏻This Film Was Shot 81 Years Ago: On August 8, 1944, troops of the U.S. 83rd Infantry Division were fighting in the streets of Saint-Malo. It was one of the German strongholds on the Brittany Peninsula that had to be taken to secure the English Channel from German fire. The division’s camera crew, including photographer Pvt. James A. Ryan, was on the scene to film and photograph the men of the 3rd Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment, as they moved down an alley. One standout moment is the scene where a bazooka is fired in the street. A day after this footage was taken, the 83rd Division succeeded in securing the city. The street fighting in Saint Malo was the first real urban combat for the division.
