This is a wonderful and complex look into the ways in which money changes people. Just finished the second of three parts to this novel, so just a bit more to go. What’s so compelling are the characters. So, you have Lafala who is becoming more and more suspicious of the people around him. People laugh at him due to his disability and anger courses through his veins because of it. There was a rather disturbing scene where a sex worker (La Fleur) tries to get in bed with him and he strikes her with his replacement leg. There is nuance to Lafala’s situation. His punishment was cruel and torturous, there’s a bit of a political edge in his burgeoning radicalization to the evils of money, but then there’s also his desire to be “whole” again. You have another character (Aslima) who is either playing Lafala for his money or truly loves him. And what’s so wonderful about McKay’s writing is that he never really tells us her whole plan. We do follow her for some chapters, we even get a section of her backstory— how she was essentially bought by a white man and became a courtesan in Marseille. So now I’m left wondering if she’s going to steal Lafala’s money for her pimp or for herself? Or, will she actually return to Africa with Lafala? Who knows??? Well, Part II ended with Lafala’s disappearance, so I’m excited to see how McKay wraps this all up.
