A college advisor’s job is to filter for people who will make their school’s brand look better (you’re like a race horse they’re betting on) They wanna see that • You’ll succeed academically (stats/scores) • You’ll make the campus community better (Clubs, ECs, Comm service) • You pass the vibe check/ the profs will wanna talk to you (do your values/mission/goals align with school’s) So that if they have to , it doesn’t make them look bad to their boss 2. Know Thy Angle Again, your application is a sales pitch. The AO will probably remember 1-2 things about you if you’re LUCKY. Therefore, it’s crucial that you get clear on what the 3 core messages or takeaways you want them to leave with, and choose what to include such that they support those three ideas eg. for my MIT application I went in knowing that, if nothing else, I needed the AO’s to know 1. I had that dawg in me/was resourceful and overcome adversity 2. I am self-aware and reflective 3. My goals were beyond MIT/ I’d make something shake with or without them So for point #1 I shared things like my FLI background and dysfunctional family For point #2 I talked about my journaling and meditation habits, and said in my essay that “expecting me to know everything about myself at a 17yo is a ridiculous task” And for point #3 I said something in my essay like “If yall accept me cool, but if not, the mission still stands — I’m fixing my family’s socioeconomic status lest I die trying” (which honestly was so fricking dramatic, but emotionally impactful) 3.
