As the sun sets on January 18th, 2025, a day which I used to call Cloverfield Day (not really, but happy 17th anniversary to it!), I'd just like to give my regards to quite possibly the biggest pioneer of the post-corporatization Free Internet. You know, despite the fact that I never really had a huge following, I always thought this place always accommodated me. Sure it was all up to an algorithm that people tustle with, but I'd be damned if I didn't say it really knew how to make someone feel so integrated even when they didn't post here all that often. Whether it was just vanilla artist stuff, comedic value from the absurd, political drama, or just connections with my own peoples, this place knew it had something just for me. But we all know the truth by now, as put by Tears for Fears: "nothing ever lasts forever, everybody wants to rule the world." I don't know what it was that made the American government go all in with this ban; maybe it was an unexpected wave of opposition of the genocide in Palestine, maybe it was cold hearted sinophobia, or just old wrinkly politicians hating the youth so hard, who really knows? Maybe this is just the shock needed for the Age of Disinformation (rad name, huh?). And in regard to the possibility of You-Know-Who number 47 bringing this place back as a publicity stunt, I don't think I'd want to return under his rule. This place was more or less for everyone, LGBT creators, non-white creators, the creative, the critic, the ridiculous, the dramatica, whatever you will. And if we come back under his rule, how many will stay? I truly believe this place was one of the last social media platforms that would endure the late Age of Information. I use that in a more liberal way, since yeah, lots of people fell for the most obvious bait and switches but you'd find out more about recent events than you would on a place like post-Musk Twitter. And for those who still holds onto their unwavering belief that this place was just for "brainrot", "tiktokification", "ruining [insert piece of media here]", then I'd like to salute you for fighting for like... 6 years by now. But lay your weapons down, it's all over. Well, for the U.S. that is. And so, my fellow Americans. I'd just like to say, it's been a good run. We've all created so much, we've all revolutionized some bits, we've all destroyed somethings here and there, and I don't think anything could ever live up to what this place meant to this country. Now I don't know if I'll move to Rednote or whatever alternative, but I'm sure you'll find me there if I do. So whether or not you absolutely felt something from this long spew of text or think I'm corny for putting so much emotion into a ramble over some phone app, my last words to you from the American side of TikTok is this: See you, space cowboys.
