This past week has been the most terrifying and holy experience of our lives. My husband suffered an M1 stroke, the kind that blocks the entire right side of the brain from blood flow and oxygen. But that’s only part of the story. When we arrived at the hospital, they found massive blood clots in both lungs, double pulmonary embolisms that can easily lead to cardiac arrest. And yet, he was still with us. Further scans revealed a large clot from above to below his left knee. They believe this clot had been slowly depositing into his lungs for some time. His body was under silent attack, and we had no idea. But God knew. See, 45 years ago, my husband was born with a hole in his heart — one that was never detected, not even through his time in the Army. That undiagnosed heart defect saved his life. It allowed a clot to bypass his lungs and reach his brain - causing a stroke instead of instant cardiac arrest. We had just woken up that morning AND we were getting ready to leave for a 10-day trip to the wilderness of Wyoming in a few days. Had this happened just a few hours earlier or a few days later, our outcome would have been so different. I can’t imagine what could’ve happened. But God’s timing is perfect. And His presence has been undeniable. Even in the first hours of this nightmare, I felt an unexplainable calm. I knew I was being carried. I was terrified, but not alone. I felt God’s hand over every decision, every doctor, every moment. And then… Dylan came to visit. Our nonverbal, non-ambulatory brother - who processes the world in a way all his own - came into that hospital room and knew. He knew his brother-in-law was hurt. He knew something wasn’t right. And in his own beautiful way, he connected with him in that space. Caring for someone with profound disabilities teaches you to see with different eyes. And moments like this remind me that connection doesn’t need words or walking - just presence. I’m sharing this because: Stroke signs can be silent until they’re sudden. Pulmonary embolisms are deadly, especially if undiagnosed. And people like my husband - those at risk but afraid to take blood thinners - need regular monitoring, second opinions, and early scans. This is only the beginning of our testimony. God is walking with us - every step. And I’ll keep sharing, because someone else might need this reminder: You are not alone.
