History below! A small preview of the old Hengoed High Level and Viaduct in the Rhymney Valley, South Wales. This line carried the Newport, Abergavenny, and Hereford Railway (NA&HR) over the Rhymney River and was one of two huge viaducts on the "Taff Vale Extension Line" route. The route from Pontypool as far as Quakers Yard High Level opened in 1858, where Hengoed High Level opened as "Rhymney Junction". The route ran perpendicular to most of the surrounding valleys and linked with several other lines, but this route fell to Dr Beeching in 1964. The viaduct closed with the line in 1964 and lay to decay for 35 years. Thankfully it was incorporated into the National Cycle network and reopened in 2000. There are safety rails and viewing platforms, as well as sculptures, benches, and the restored remains of Hengoed High Level Station. Sadly the second major viaduct on the route - the huge steel Crumlin Viaduct over the Ebbw River - was dismantled in the 60's shortly after the line closed. Still, even this "smaller" viaduct is so incredibly impressive and imposing and the views were spectacular even on a cloudy day like this.
