Earlier this month, Lebanonās cabinet endorsed the objectives of a U.S. proposal restricting weapons possession solely to the state, despite Hezbollah rejecting it as a āmarch in humiliation.ā U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus added that every step Lebanon takes toward disarmament would be matched by Israel, while Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has reaffirmed the groupās refusal to disarm, citing Israelās continued aggression and the need to defend Lebanese sovereignty. Hezbollah emerged weakened from last yearās conflict with Israel, which killed thousands of fighters and civilians, assassinated senior leaders and displaced tens of thousands.
