Orlando Julius Ekemode (1943–2022) was a Nigerian saxophonist, singer, bandleader, and songwriter, a pioneering force in the birth of Afrobeat, experimenting from the early 1960s by blending highlife with American soul, funk, and jazz. . He began by playing drums and flute with juju and konkoma bands before learning the saxophone to perform highlife. Julius later played with musicians like Jazz Romero, Rex Williams, and Eddie Okonta. His first major hits came with 1965’s Jagua Nana and the 1966 album Super Afro Soul. . In the 1970s, Julius moved to the United States, where he formed a band with Hugh Masekela and later worked as a session musician, before returning to Nigeria in 1984. A series of reissues in the 2000s and 2010s revived his legacy, leading to international tours and a collaboration with The Heliocentrics that reached the Billboard World Albums chart. . On April 15, 2022, Orlando Julius passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 78. On the same day, the Elegboro of Ijebu-Jesa praised him as “a very good ambassador of Ijebu-Jesa town, Oriade local government, and Nigeria as a whole.” The Minister of Information and Culture also issued a statement describing his passion for music as “unparalleled” and crediting him with helping to bring Afrobeat to the global stage. .
