Testing 5 drum overhead microphone positions, each with isolated overheads only, and then in the context of a full mix. Use a good pair of headphones to hear full low end response and stereo width between each position. This was something I was long overdue for. When I moved into this studio I threw my overheads up as a spaced pair and left them for years. At some point I switched to ORTF and kept that for years as well. Recently I’ve wanted other flavors, and I think I’ve settled on one that brought the best combination of stereo width, pleasant low end, and air around the toms. That position is Massenburg. Each position brings its own set of advantages and drawbacks, and of course everything is song/project dependent, so there’s no right or wrong position. Whatever sounds best for that piece of music is the right thing. The differences are interesting and have a stylistic flavor. XY is (as you’d expect) very mono /narrow and feels like a vintage 60’s / 70’s vibe whereas spaced pair has a huge stereo spread and feels super modern to me. Albini gives the kit a totally different feel than the rest, and Massenburg gives the toms a really natural air. To be clear, I labeled the final 2 positions after those guys because that’s where I learned them from, not necessarily because they are famously attributed to them. George Massenburg has a video on YT walking through miking a drum kit and describes his overhead philosophy which prioritizes the axis of the kick and snare. Steve Albini used his position with the mics behind the drummer / over the shoulder in several videos I’ve seen. Also, every mic position shootout is going to be different due to a million factors. This is how these positions with these mics on my drums in my room sound. Something that works for me in my room could sound terrible in a different space.
