Usman Lala was a shining star in the struggle for the national liberation of Pashtunkhwa, the defense of independent Afghanistan, progressive republican politics, and the path of social justice. He was born into the home of a tribal chief from the Sargarai tribe at a time when, on one hand, the Afghan state had begun interfering to enforce a bloody policy of making Pashtunkhwa the fifth province of an independent Afghanistan and accepting the Durand Line as a permanent and recognized border. On the other hand, the oppressed Afghan Pashtunkhwa was under state repression, deprived of control over its own resources, of national identity, and divided into different administrative units. Despite holding a respectable position as a tribal chief, Usman Lala chose the path of national and progressive politics and stood against the systems of tribalism and chieftaincy till his last breath. He so deeply embodied the principles of clean, principled, and organized politics that he never desired protocol, money, or fame. He led a very simple life. At a very young age, he was elected as the first central secretary of the Pashtunkhwa Students Organization and later took on various responsibilities in the Pashtunkhwa MAP (Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party). He tirelessly promoted the ideology of his party and his national beliefs day and night. There was hardly a village left in Pashtunkhwa, especially in southern Pashtunkhwa, that Usman Lala had not visited. He was deeply committed to his ideology and politics. He never showed laziness, negligence, or hesitation in his political and organizational work. If one speaks of sincerity, integrity, respect, and sacrifice in politics, then the name of Shaheed Usman Lala will surely be recorded at the forefront of history. Alas, Pashtunkhwa has lost many priceless lives in vain. The very ones who fought for independence – their martyrdom and the protests raised in their name – could not bring us freedom.
