⚠️(Educational Content)⚠️ Born in Padang on 10 April 1917, he was the son of Paul Schneewind, the German consul in Padang. Fritz was therefore fascinated by the maritime world since childhood. Fritz Schneewind then joined the Kriegsmarine in 1936. He was a candidate at the Naval Academy in Flensburg from October 1939 to August 1940. During this time he also served on the sailing ship Leo Schlageter from March to June 1940. From August to October 1940, Schneewind served in Kriegsmarine logistics in Boulogne. His career progressed, until he was promoted to the rank of Captain and on 20 November 1943. Schneewind then took command of U-183 in Singapore. The ship operated in the Indian Ocean as part of the Monsoon group. Schneewind successfully completed 4 patrols with the boat. During these patrols she sank or destroyed 3 ships for nearly 18,000 tonnes. On her fifth patrol, U-183 commanded by Schneewind was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Besugo in the Java Sea and sank leaving only 1 survivor out of a crew of 55, 23 April 1945. The 55 crew members who died included Captain Schneewind.
