On this day in Mickey Mouse history, Mickey took a darker turn in 1995’s Runaway Brain. Nominated for an Academy Award, this short is remembered for having a much more sinister vibe than any other Mickey cartoon. It follows Mickey, who forgot his anniversary with Minnie, doing whatever it takes to afford the perfect trip for the two of them, until things take a wild turn when mad scientist Dr. Frankenollie swaps his brain with Julius, a giant Pete-like monster who tries to steal Minnie for himself. Directed by Chris Bailey, the short is often overlooked today, as Disney seems hesitant to acknowledge it due to its darker tone and their beloved mascot acting very out of character.
