In collaboration with LP.ME Studio from Dubai, we did the testing between the legendary FairChild 670 and the plugin version VC-670 from IK Multimedia.⠀ ⠀ Our thoughts: 👇⠀ ⠀ ➡️ Daniel (The owner of LPME Studio): "In the hardware version, the pumping feels much more logical and musical. The low frequencies are fully preserved, resulting in a stronger low end and a fuller body, even when the compression is set to a heavy or hard setting.⠀ ⠀ In contrast, with the plugin, the low frequencies and low end tend to be more affected by the compression, losing some of their body and fullness. The pumping also feels more artificial and less natural.⠀ ⠀ Another major difference I noticed is that, in the hardware Fairchild Vintage, when the low frequencies trigger pumping, the midrange and higher frequencies are much less affected. This keeps the mids sounding healthier and clearer. However, in the plugin, whenever the kick and bass produce a punchy presence, the midrange and high frequencies also become slightly affected by the pumping."⠀ ⠀ ➡️ Marko (The owner of Md3sign Studio): "There's a big reason why hardware version hold the price and it's purely logical that the software version can't reproduce that sound.⠀ ⠀ We rendered out the tracks out and put them in Izotope RX 11, which clearly displayed that the transients are better preserved with the hardware version, the compression feels more natural and the coloration is just outstanding.⠀ ⠀ However, I'll definitely say that the plugin version holds on very, very good and it absolutely approves the price point. Being able to hold head-to-head with an insane hardware unit is a great achievement for IK Multimedia!⠀ ⠀ The software version holds the signal, compresses and makes sure it sounds great. Hardware version is more tolerant which allows to achieve more natural sounding compression."⠀ ⠀ ➡️ The conclusion: Hardware surely sounds better, which is logical, but the software represents a great alternative. The original FairChild 670 as used for this test is super hard to find, it's a rare unit.
