fun fact: when I was 16 I left my studio to train at a more “ballet” focused studio becuase I was tired of being only of only 2 people in our class of 12 who didn’t skip ballet on a weekly basis (ballet was mandatory but everyone skipped it anyway so we could never get anything done). The new studio it was still a comp studio, but I was excited to dance with girls who loved ballet as much as I did. The problem is the first class they asked us to do 4 fouettés en pointe (which I had never attempted before) so I couldn’t really do them. The teacher was really annoyed at me, but she also didn’t provide any further information as to how to do them. Looking back, as a dance teacher myself now, I have no idea why that teacher was annoyed at me. The correct response when someone hasn’t quite learned to do fouettés yet is “that’s okay, why don’t you do consecutive pirouettes from 5th in place of fouettés”. It’s not that hard. I left that studio after 2 weeks and went back to the original one becuase even though the students were doing more ballet, the studio wasn’t really teaching ballet, if that makes sense. Anyways 11 years later I can do 10 good fouettés and 6 sketchy ones. So what’s the moral of this story?
