It is with a heavy heart that the Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station (LARS) announces the passing of Yessey, aka "Little Man" or "Yeskerdoodles", our 20 year and 7 month old muskox. Yessey had been under watchful eye over the past several months, however, due to his advancing age and declining health, the animal care and veterinary teams decided that euthanasia was the most humane option. Yessey was born April 23rd, 2004, and was the oldest muskox at the Station, outliving the typical lifespan of 10-12 years for a wild muskox bull. As the farm's only cannulated animal, Yessey was integral to the maintenance of our muskox herd's health. Yessey provided rumen fluid to other ruminants in need throughout the state for "transfaunation" -- a process that entailed transferring Yessey's rumen microflora to others that needed a jump start to their digestion. To his animal care team, Yessey was an icon providing important learning opportunities for new staff and student employees. He knew who was in charge in his pen and it was always him, but an offering of D ration would appease him for a time. An employee rite of passage was collecting rumen fluid and experiencing a rumen contraction all over your arm.
