The gateway of the Sahara 🏜️ Welcome to Douz, one of Tunisia’s entryways into the Sahara desert. Although our stay in this town was brief, one thing we wanted to see before we crossed the desert was the old abandoned village oasis of Zafrane 🌴 Sand dunes as far as the eye can see, palm trees dotting the landscape and the ruins of a once thriving oasis was what greeted us after a short trek which seemingly led to nowhere. Getting to this place was no easy feat…it was 40 degrees celsius and there was no clear path. So we walked and walked until we finally stumbled upon this magnificent view 🥹 One thing to keep in mind when visiting is that this area starts off as a landfill. Unfortunately many use this place as a dumping site and there were kms upon kms of trash just laying in the sand. So yes, trekking there was very difficult. It was also heartbreaking to say the least because I don’t think i’ll ever witness something so beautiful as this anywhere else in the world.
