About I’m putting together sounds for Mp3 Sound Effect
I’m putting together sounds for a Blue Note–inspired drum sample and loop pack, chasing that classic Rudy Van Gelder sound heard on so many iconic records by John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and others. It’s a minimal mic setup, but the magic really comes from the combination of microphones, placement, room sound, and tube/tape saturation. Of course, having some of the greatest drummers in the world didn’t hurt either. I’m no Roy Haynes, but while I had the sound dialed in, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to finally try the opening drum intro to “Reflection” from his We Three album on Blue Note. I’ve loved this drum intro since I was a teenager but I’d never attempted to play it until now!
