This video is a generalization meant to bring awareness. ABOUT PTSD: PTSD is a mental health condition caused by an extremely stressful and/or terrifying event. Many people who experience traumatic events may have difficulty coping and adjusting for a while but eventually get better with consistent care. When symptoms last for months and/or years and disrupt daily function it may be PTSD. Symptoms are generally grouped into 4 categories: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking/mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions. Symptoms vary over time and from person to person but some common symptoms include: - Unwanted memories, nightmares, and/or flashbacks - Memory loss around important aspects of the traumatic event - Severe emotional distress at triggers - Avoiding reminders of places/activities/people that remind you of the traumatic event - Negative thoughts about yourself and/or the world - Distorted thoughts and feelings leading you to blame yourself or others - Ongoing feelings of fear, guilt and/or shame - Feeling detached from friends, family, and your emotions - Not being interested in activities once enjoyed - Feeling emotionally numb - Irritability and angry outbursts - Reckless and/or self destructive behavior - Trouble sleeping and concentrating - Always being on guard / hyper-vigilance - Being easily startled/frightened, - Physical reactions such as sweating, headaches, fast heartbeat, and shaking CPTSD (complex PTSD) can develop when trauma is constant/long-term.
