Starr admitted the song was partly inspired by his desire to escape the tensions within the Beatles: "at the time I just wanted to be under the sea, too." Starr said he was "stoned" when he heard the captain's story about octopus gardens, and it struck him as "the best idea of [his] life." Two incidents contributed to the song: his son's nanny encountering an octopus and the captain's story. George Harrison helped Ringo develop the song's chord changes.
