“The Batcave” - FDNY Engine 26 is NYC’s oldest active fire station (established in 1865). According to Ed Wilmarth (Volunteer Firemen’s Association of NYC): The members over the years nicknamed it “the Bat Cave” because the inside of the firehouse (the term fire station is not used in NYC) receives little to no sunlight being surrounded by much taller buildings and is very cave-like. The Batman stickers and memorabilia were added over the years after the company’s nickname had already been chosen. The building itself is indeed the oldest in continuous use in all five boroughs that started as a firehouse and is still an active firehouse. This firehouse actually pre-dates the FDNY being organized in 1865. It was originally built for and occupied by Valley Forge Engine Company 46 of the VFDNY, the volunteer fire department of New York.
