The "Oscar's Martini" sign on East Fremont Street has a rich history tied to the revitalization of the downtown area. The sign was created in 2007 by Fluoresco Lighting & Signs, a Tucson, Arizona-based company. The design work was done by Selbert Perkins Design, a company known for creating environmental graphics and public art. Mark Mackin, a technical-support specialist at Fluoresco, was involved in the project. The sign was originally going to have the "liquid" labeled as vodka, but then-Mayor Oscar Goodman, a gin martini purist, insisted on changing the label to "gin." Unlike many of the other famous signs in downtown Las Vegas that have been restored, the martini glass is not a vintage sign. It was created specifically for the Fremont East Entertainment District's revitalization to evoke the classic, mid-century "Googie" style of Las Vegas's golden age. It was installed along with other new neon streetscapes, including a showgirl and a "Viva Vegas" sign. The sign stands on a 38-foot pole. The glass itself is an impressive 21 feet high and 19 feet wide. The sign is not just a static display; it has an animated sequence that makes it appear as though the glass is filling up with liquid and spokes of light are rotating around it.
