I started as an apprentice ironworker 3 years ago. When I started I sucked. In a world of technological advances where men’s physical strengths aren’t as valued as much as before, I don’t want to take away from the few jobs that still value men and hard work by saying “oh it’s so easy a girl can do it 🙄.” No! It’s not easy. Being an ironworker is hard. And when I decided to stay in this trade I made a choice. I wanted not to just be an iron worker, I wanted to be a valuable ironworker! I changed my entire life to take on this challenge. As a woman it is 10x as hard just to be considered a good worker in such a physically demanding trade. I changed my entire diet, working 10 hours of hard labor then hitting the gym, just to keep up and traveling non stop living in my van. I learned it’s not just physical strength but mental strength, crossing the boundaries of what you thought your body could do and becoming mentally strong. I made a choice because of my love for continuously challenging myself and doing quality work. I understand more than ever how much men should be valued. And I am so grateful for all the men I have worked with who pushed me to become a stronger woman. And I will continue to grow. But this is not an easy life for a woman especially if you don’t want to be an expendable worker.
