Crowd waits for the execution of Eugen Weidmann (Eugène Weidmann) on June 17, 1939, in Versailles, outside the prison Saint-Pierre. He is found guilty of murder and sentenced to death and becomes the last man to be guillotined in public. Weidmann’s crime spree in 1937 involved the murders of several victims—including American tourist Jean de Koven—via kidnapping and robbery in the Paris region, executed coldly and without remorse. When he was finally apprehended, tried, and convicted, his execution drew an enormous and unruly public crowd. Reportedly, spectators cheered, some sprayed champagne, and others even collected drops of his blood—a spectacle that scandalized both the public and the authorities . The reaction was so extreme that, shortly afterward, the French government acted decisively. On 24 June 1939, Prime Minister Édouard Daladier decreed the end of public executions. From that point onward, executions—including guillotinings—were to be conducted privately within prison walls . The "hysterical behavior" by spectators is so scandalous that French President Albert Lebrun immediately bannes all future public executions.
